Το "Έγκλημα στον Νείλο" είναι ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα της Agatha Christie. Το βιβλίο παρουσιάζει τη ζωή της πλούσια κληρονόμου Linnet Ridgeway η οποία παντρεύεται τον -πρώην- ερωμένο (Simon Doyle) της καλύτερής της φίλης και ξεπεσμένης αριστοκράτισσας Jacqueline de Bellefort. Η Jacqueline ακολουθεί το νεόνυμφο ζευγάρι στο μήνα μέλιτός τους στην Αίγυπτο και στοιχειώνει κάθε στιγμή τους. Τελικά, το ζευγάρι ξεφεύγει από αυτήν, επιβιβαζόμενοι σε ένα πολυτελές ατμόπλοιο που διασχίζει το Νείλο. Στο ατμόπλοιο επιβαίνει και ο διάσημος Βέλγος ντετέκτιβ Hercule Poirot, ο οποίος συναντά μια από τις πιο σκοτεινές υποθέσεις της ζωής του όταν πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσει έναν ανώνυμο και μυστηριώδη δολοφόνο στο ατμόπλοιο.

Το διάσημο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα που πρωτοεκδόθηκε το 1937 και μεταφέρθηκε στον κινηματογράφο το 1978 είναι μόλις ένα από τα 26 βιβλία της Agatha Christie που συμπεριλήφθηκε στη λίστα των έργων της την οποία ανέλαβε να αποκωδικοποιήσει ομάδα ειδικών.

Σύμφωνα με τους ισχυρισμούς της ομάδας στην οποία είναι επικεφαλής ο Dominique Jeannerod, του Πανεπιστήμιου Queens, σε κάθε μυθιστόρημα υπάρχουν συγκεκριμένα "σημάδια" που οδηγούν γρήγορα τον αναγνώστη στην αποκάλυψη του δολοφόνου.

Υποστηρίζουν ότι η "φόρμουλα" τους είναι απλή και βασίζεται στη γλώσσα και στη δομή που η συγγραφέας επιλέγει αναλόγως την περίπτωση.

Σύμφωνα με την Βρετανική Daily Telegraph,ο ένοχος κάνει την εμφάνιση του στο πρώτο μισό του βιβλίου και ότι συνδέεται συναισθηματικά με το θύμα -πρόκειται κατά κανόνα για σύζυγο, ή συγγενή εξ αίματος.

Στην επιτροπή έλαβαν μέρος επίσης ο James Bernthal από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Exeter και ο αναλυτής δεδομένων Brett Jacob.

Η Agatha Christie, λέει η ομάδα, χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο αρνητική γλώσσα για τις γυναίκες δολοφόνους.

Η έρευνα που ξεκλείδωσε τα μυστήρια του έργου της Agatha Christie συμπίπτει με τον εορτασμό των 125 χρόνων από τη γέννησή της.
